Victorian painted enamel terrier pin C1870
J. W. Bailey was John William Bailey (1831–1914), a British Victorian miniature painter best known for finely detailed enamel portraits of dogs and other animals.
He was not primarily a large-scale animal painter; his specialty was small, highly finished miniature enamels, often of individual dogs.
Like this charming little terrier pin.
Bailey was born in London on 27 April 1831, the son of a tanner, and trained under the enamellist William Essex.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy for almost three decades.
