Georgian Silver plated vinaigrette dated 1822

This original Georgian heart locket opens to reveal an interior space where little treasures and be secreted away. A lock of hair, a photograph or even medication.

These pieces are called Hovedvandsaeg and were introduced in Scandinavia around the 1600's and remained in use until the mid 1800's.

These items of jewellery were originally designed to hold a small sponge soaked in a strong perfume, rose water or aromatic vinegar to be used to keep the noxious smells of the era at bay, or to revive someone about to faint.

Ladies would carry them to social functions or wear them as jewellery like this one. I think the chain was designed to go onto a chatelaine or to be worn on a ribbon around the neck.

These were often given as love tokens, which this was probably was. A fascinating piece of history.

This one is personalised with the year date 1822 and the initials of the lucky recipient, probably a  T J and S S.

Material: Silver plate

Height: from the top loop to the bottom odf the heart 8.5cm

Heart alone: 4.5cm high by just over 3cm wide.

Weight: 16.9grms

Condition: great for it's age. A small dent to the front and light wear consistent with it's age of over 200 years old.
