Victorian Silver and Paste Starburst Brooch

Extremely bright and chirpy prong set paste stones in a starburst formation.

Whilst it is presented as a brooch, there is evidence on the back that indicates it also was part of an ornate hair piece.

It could have been part of a parure or set that could be adapted by attaching or breaking down the pieces into various combinations.

The quality of the paste stones and the workmanship is a reminder that these jewels were often skilled copies of significant pieces of jewels that were worn in the country while the originals languished in the bank vaults in the city only to be worn in a more secure environment.

There are no markings which also could indicate that it was part of a larger set with only some of the pieces stamped.

It has a number of characteristics of French/Continental jewellery from this period.

The hinged pin is in sound condition. In overall very good antique condition. Circa 1890.

Metal : Tests for silver.

Stones : quality paste (leaded glass).

Dimensions : Diameter 4.2 cm

Total weight : 10.2 gm
